Beyond cleansing, water symbolizes many different ideas in our collective imaginations: the cycle of birth, death, and regeneration; moral purification; religious induction and meditation; thirst and desire; as well as the omnipotent power of nature. In our culture, the bathtub is a familiar place where most people feel a great sense of comfort. Yet its physical limitations can foster both intimacy and frustration. These constraints, along with the charged nature of the symbolism of water, created both a psychological and graphic tension that I have tried to capture in these bathtub portraits.
